Now you listen to me, Nymphadora. Yes, I’m calling you Nymphadora, that should tell you how serious I am. This isn’t like the blokes at work, the ones who’re always up for a pint at the pub, laughing whenever you make a joke or a pig’s nose, hoping you don’t notice them checking out your arse as you walk away. He’s much more than that. He’s going to need time. He’s well worth the wait.

She walked back to the table where the Order members who hadn’t fallen asleep during Snape’s update at the meeting earlier, were gathered for a drink and a laugh. They didn’t do this nearly as often as they should. It always felt comforting when they did.

Emmeline and Hestia were entertaining everyone with tales from their Hogwarts years. No one had the heart to tell them that Bill’s stories were much funnier. It was nice all the same, a reminder of better days, of what they wanted back and why they were doing this. Tonks tried not to be disappointed that her seat had been taken when she went to the loo, making her sit as far away from Remus as possible. It was no use talking, but their eyes met. She offered a smile, Remus gave one back, a big one. That was new. Maybe this no-talking-thing wasn’t so bad after all.

The music in the pub grew louder, some began to dance.

For as long as she could remember, Tonks had loved to dance. Her usual clumsy self was left behind when she moved her body to the rhythm. Some might say her dancing was slightly unorthodox. Maybe it was. That didn’t change the freedom and confidence that always filled her.

“You want to dance?”

Remus looked up, mildly surprised, mildly amused.

“Certainly.”

She didn’t expect him to say yes. Now that he did, she was going to enjoy every second of it. And she was going to do her best to make him enjoy it too.

Her movements were erratic and sharp, his were small and reserved. They probably looked silly.
She felt wonderful. He looked happy.

It’s a start. One step at the time, and all that. You may not know it yet, Remus, but I’m here for you. Until the end.

This is absolutely adorable! I love the slightly acid humor in Tonks's thoughts -- the Order members who hadn’t fallen asleep during Snape’s update at the meeting, and Bill's stories being funnier than Hestia and Emmeline's -- as well as the pep talk she's giving herself about waiting for Remus.

It's also perfect that he surprises her by smiling, and by agreeing to dance. And I love her thoughts on how even the way they dance is different.

And of course, that ending makes me want to pat her on the shoulder and cheer her on. Remus is definitely worth waiting for -- worth not giving up on. :D
Oh lovely! Humour, dancing and much promise for the R/T future - some of my favourite things to read. It's fun to glimpse the other Order members, too. Their different dancing styles seem to fit them perfectly, and I love your three short sentences, which say it all: They probably looked silly. She felt wonderful. He looked happy.

Thank you!
I'm glad you think those three sentences capture them :D
I imagine this happening early in OotP, before Remus decides that he can't talk to her (or dance with her...).

And here's me deciding not to put too much emphasis on info coming from the Pottermore-bio, lol, but it sneaks its way in;)
Don't mention adhering to the bio; I have done a fair bit of head-banging over it in recent days. LOL.

Yes, I nearly said this line was absolutely perfect bio foreshadowing, and that Tonks was probably going to change her mind slightly as time goes on! Maybe this no-talking-thing wasn’t so bad after all. ;)

Indeed!

I feel certain that your head-banging will result in great fictional prowess, even if your head doesn't appreciate it ;)

Speaking of head-banging, I've got two kids sick with chicken pox now, and my games fic is a mess, I'm so stressed *breaths deeply* ;)

OH NO. :( Poor kids and poor you; it must be misery all round. But what a Superwoman you are to have pulled off this drabble with all that going on.

Fic messes can be sorted out (and a lot more easily when you're not so stressed), and it's only the start of September. I'm sending good health wishes and *hugs* for you: hug
I love the idea of them smiling across from each other down a long table. Real genuine smiles too! I imagine that in such a film-ic way, long shot to close up of these two matching beaming grins.

It's lovely, a little piece of happiness before I get some sleep!
Thank you!
I like the idea of the little scene at the table in a film-ic way! It played out a bit like that in my head as well.
Oh, a drawing of that scene sounds wonderful:)
I'm completely pants at drawing myself.
Are you an artist?
Not really an artist, I am a teaching assistant in digital art and media and former animation graduate. My partner is a the real artist. A freelance illustrator and animator. I will see if I can convince him :)
