Summary: Back at Hogwarts, eighth year turns out to be just as miserable as Draco had suspected. Struggling with post-war apathy, he tries to find something positive he can do for himself. Like secretly learning how to swim in the Great Lake. Only things don't go as planned when Potter somehow finds out.
Notes: Written for hd_eighthyear 2015.
I wasn't planning to write anything for this fest, but when I saw birdsofshore's delicious prompt, this little plotbunny jumped into my head and wouldn't let go.
I had such a great time writing this fic, I felt like I disappeared into Draco's head in a way I haven't in a while. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out in the way that it became pretty much the story I wanted to tell. That isn't always the case :) But at the same time, I worried that it ended up being some strange, introverted thing that nobody would enjoy (then again, I always worry about stuff like that :)), so I was very relieved to get some wonderful comments, telling me that it worked for some people. Thank you!
Many thanks to the mods for bearing with me, and to twistedm for beta reading! ♥ I've made a few changes afterwards, so any remaining mistakes are all mine.

Me too! I'm not even sure I've read one of the other 8yfics (shame on me, I know), but I saw a rec and the summary was so intruiging...I had to read it. And I already told you, that I loved it. I still do. :D
I'm so glad you enjoyed, and I was thrilled to read your wonderful comment! It means a lot :) ♥♥♥
Oh, I'm so excited to read this! You have been so very busy - and this looks truly lovely :D

That's wonderful! Heartbreaking and sweet -- and hot. I love the way it starts with Draco thinking about his mother's love, maybe the only thing that's still getting through to him (I do like his careful letters to her even though he supposes she can see what he's trying to hide). Then Draco starts to understand the concern and caring -- in their own various ways -- that he's seeing from Pansy and Blaise and even McGonagall. Then finally Harry, and the heartbreaking mixture of wariness and trust. I love the moment when Draco finally learns that he has things to give Harry, too. And I love the point you've chosen for the ending (and ha, now I almost want a fluffy sequel where Draco finds out about the Map).

(How are things? Are you back to routine from the holidays?)
Thank you, I'm so happy you enjoyed!
I absolutely think Narcissa's love is the one thing than still gets through for real at the start of the fic. And I do like to think that even if Draco wouldn't ever be Minerva's favourite person, that she would include him in her concern for the school and everyone in it.
Ah yes, a fluffy sequel would be fun, haha, I think Harry's version of things would be rather entertaining :)
Thank you so much for reading and for your lovely comment <3

Things are slowly getting back to normal over here - I feel like I've constantly been behind on everything since summer, heh, but I suppose I'm not the only one with that feeling :) I hope things are going well in your corner of the world :D
